A really cool feature in both the iPhone game pocket tanks and the online jagex game archanists is ground which can be blown up. When a projectile collides with the ground, an area equal to the blast radius which overlaps the ground is removed. It's strictly two dimensional, but it makes the experience that much more dynamic since you can dig a hole under your opponents or yourself.

How is this implemented?
